Raktha Chamundi

The blood-red Chamundi who drank the blood of the demon Raktabija — fierce, brilliant and breathtaking in costume.

Raktha Chamundi is the fierce form of Kali who killed the demon Raktabija, from whose every drop of spilled blood a new demon arose; she drank his blood before it touched the ground. The Theyyam is a riot of red, with an enormous mudi, elaborate breast-plate and a face painted in intricate patterns. She is one of the principal deities of many family shrines (tharavadus) in Kannur.
