The 286 m "Mount Eli" of ancient sailors, seat of the Mushika kings and now the Indian Naval Academy.
Ezhimala, a hill rising straight from the sea north of Payyanur, was a landmark for Arab and European sailors and the capital of the ancient Mushika dynasty. It is said to be where Buddhist monks lived and where rare medicinal herbs grow. The hill is now within the Indian Naval Academy, Asia's largest, and access requires prior permission; the beaches at Ettikulam and Ezhimala village are open.
