A 1505 Portuguese sea-fort with cannons, laterite ramparts and sweeping views of Mappila Bay and the Arabian Sea.
Built by the first Portuguese Viceroy Dom Francisco de Almeida in 1505, St. Angelo Fort passed to the Dutch in 1663 and to the British in 1790, becoming their most important military station on the Malabar coast. The massive laterite ramparts, moat, secret passages, a chapel and rows of cannons are well preserved. From the bastions you look over the fishing harbour of Mappila Bay and the Arakkal Palace.
