A wronged woman of Kadangodu, murdered with her two children by jealous relatives and worshipped ever since as a goddess.
Makkam Bhagavathi ("Makkavum Makkalum" — Makkam and her children) is a poignant ancestor Theyyam performed at Kadangodu near Kunhimangalam and in Nair family shrines. The Theyyam, with two small figures representing her children, is performed by the Vannan community and often moves the audience to tears.
The legend
Makkam, the only sister of twelve brothers, was slandered by her jealous sisters-in-law and killed along with her two children. Repenting, the family deified her.
