Muchilottu Bhagavathi

The graceful mother goddess of the Vaniya community, with over a hundred Muchilottu kavus across North Malabar and the grandest Perumkaliyattams.

Muchilottu Bhagavathi is among the most beloved and most elaborately costumed Theyyams. Her kavus, found across Kannur and Kasaragod, are looked after by the Vaniya community. Unlike the fierce Chamundis, she is a gentle, motherly figure: her face paint is delicate, her enormous circular headgear (mudi) rises like a halo and she blesses devotees with turmeric and rice. Her annual Kaliyattams and the rare Perumkaliyattam, held at a kavu only once in a generation, draw lakhs of people.

The legend

A learned young woman of Perinchellur (Taliparamba) defeated the scholars in debate. Humiliated, they accused her of immorality and cast her out. She walked to Karivellur, jumped into a sacrificial fire and was reborn as a goddess. She appeared to a Vaniya oil-presser named Muchilottu Padanair, who built her first shrine at Karivellur.
