Gundert Bungalow (Illikkunnu)

The 1839 home of Hermann Gundert, who compiled the first Malayalam–English dictionary and printed the first Malayalam newspaper.

Dr Hermann Gundert, German missionary and grandfather of Hermann Hesse, lived in this bungalow at Illikkunnu, Thalassery for twenty years. Here he compiled the Malayalam–English dictionary (1872) and published Rajyasamacharam, Kerala's first newspaper. The building is now a heritage museum and part of the Thalassery Heritage Project.
