Thalassery is one of the great food towns of India. Its short-grain kaima-rice biryani, fried and stuffed mussels (kallummakkaya nirachathu), banana-and-coconut unnakkaya, and the Mappila tea-time snacks are legendary. The town also claims the first Christmas cake baked in India (Mambally's Royal Biscuit Factory, 1883). Walk the old bazaar, the fish market at the pier and the sweet shops of Tiruvangad.
