Watch or learn Kerala's ancient martial art in a traditional kalari, and visit Theyyam artists' workshops where the mudi and ornaments are made.
Kannur and Thalassery are strongholds of Kalaripayattu, the martial art whose movements are woven into the swordplay of Theyyams like Kathivanoor Veeran. Several kalaris offer evening demonstrations and short courses. Theyyam artists' families in Kannur also welcome visitors to see the making of the headgear (mudi), ornaments and face-painting kits, especially in the off-season (June–September).
Best time
Year-round; Theyyam studios best in the off-season
How to reach
Demonstrations by prior arrangement; DTPC Kannur can connect visitors with kalaris and artist families.
